Delhi High Court Suspends Judge Over Alleged Misconduct in Rape Case⚖️

Delhi High Court Suspends Judge Amid Serious Misconduct Allegations⚖️

The Delhi High Court has suspended a district judge and recommended disciplinary proceedings against him and another judge after a woman lawyer filed a complaint accusing them of pressuring her to withdraw rape allegations against a Delhi-based advocate. The allegations, supported by audio recordings, prompted swift intervention from the judiciary.

Timeline of Events📅

Records of the full court meeting held on August 28, reviewed by Hindustan Times, revealed that district judge Sanjeev Kumar Singh was suspended, and proceedings were initiated against him and judge Anil Kumar. The action followed complaints of grave judicial misconduct submitted by the 27-year-old complainant before Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya in July and later to the registrar general, leading to a vigilance inquiry.

Allegations by the Complainant🧑‍⚖️

The complainant, a young advocate who had previously worked as a law clerk under both judges, alleged that Singh and Kumar acted on behalf of the accused lawyer in her rape case. She claimed they pressured her to retract her charges and give a favorable statement in court.

She further stated that Singh went as far as offering her a monetary settlement, claiming he had already received ₹30 lakh from the accused lawyer, which she would get if she agreed to compromise. When she refused, Singh allegedly threatened to frame her brother in a fabricated drugs case.

Evidence Submitted📞

To back her claims, the complainant provided:

  • 📱 Call logs
  • 💬 Screenshots of conversations
  • 🎙️ Three audio recordings (submitted on a pen drive)
These materials reportedly captured both judges instructing her not to undergo a medical examination and to tell a magistrate that filing the case was a “mistake.”

Vigilance Committee Findings👩‍⚖️

Both Singh and Kumar were summoned before the High Court’s vigilance committee on August 27–28. While they denied wrongdoing, Singh “could not explain” one of the audio recordings presented.

The committee—comprising Justices Subramonium Prasad, Prateek Jalan, Amit Bansal, Amit Sharma, and Manoj Jain—recommended Singh’s suspension and disciplinary proceedings against both officers. The full court endorsed the decision, and Singh was officially suspended on August 29 by Registrar General Arun Bhardwaj. He was also barred from leaving the national capital without prior permission.

Additional Contention⚠️

The complainant also alleged that she was introduced in January 2025 to a then-sitting Delhi High Court judge through the accused’s lawyer, who promised her a position as a law researcher. However, the records show no indication of the High Court judge’s role in the current case, and proceedings remain confined to Singh and Kumar.

Current Status📰

HT reached out to both judges for their comments, but no response was received at the time of publishing.
