From Death Row to Hope: Nimisha Priya’s Shocking Turnaround in Yemen⛓️

Nimisha Priya’s Death Sentence in Yemen Reportedly Overturned📰

The death sentence of Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse convicted of murder in Yemen, has reportedly been overturned and fully cancelled, according to a statement released by the office of Indian Grand Mufti, Kanthapuram AP Abubakker Musliyar, on Monday.

Decision Made After High-Level Meeting in Sanaa📍

According to the Grand Mufti’s office, the decision came after a significant diplomatic meeting held in Sanaa, Yemen’s capital.

“The death sentence of Nimisha Priya, which was previously suspended, has been overturned. A high-level meeting held in Sanaa decided to completely cancel the death sentence that was temporarily suspended earlier,” the statement read, as quoted by ANI.

However, Indian government officials have not yet officially confirmed the news. According to Mint, some sources have stated that certain details being circulated are inaccurate.

Background of the Case🧾

Nimisha Priya, a 37-year-old nurse from Kerala, was sentenced to death in 2018 for the murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi. Her execution was originally scheduled for July 16, 2025, after Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council upheld the sentence in November 2023.

Priya had been working in Yemen for years. In 2014, amidst increasing civil unrest, her husband and daughter returned to India. She stayed and partnered with Talal Mahdi to open a clinic—since only Yemeni citizens could legally own such businesses.

According to a plea filed by Priya’s mother:

  • Mahdi manipulated documents and falsely claimed to be her husband.
  • He seized her passport and took control of her earnings.
  • She endured abuse, threats, and torture under the influence of drugs.

When she approached the local police for help, she was instead jailed for six days. After her release, the abuse intensified. In July 2017, on advice from a jail warden, Priya attempted to sedate Mahdi to retrieve her passport and flee. The attempt tragically ended in Mahdi’s death due to a drug overdose.

Indian Government’s Intervention🤝

The case drew nationwide and international attention. On July 17, 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed its active involvement. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that:

  • Legal aid had been provided to Priya.
  • Efforts for clemency or pardon under Sharia law were underway.

Her execution had already been postponed thanks to diplomatic efforts and advocacy by human rights groups and Indian diaspora communities.

Current Status: Awaiting Confirmation⏳

As of now, while the Grand Mufti’s office claims the death sentence has been overturned, official confirmation from the Indian government is still pending. The situation remains fluid, and updates from verified government channels are awaited.
