India-Pakistan Ceasefire: Modi Rebuts Trump’s Claim of US Mediation and Trade Deal Link
Modi Clarifies During Call with Trump📞
Weeks after former US President Donald Trump claimed credit for brokering a “ceasefire” between India and Pakistan and linking it to a prospective trade deal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi firmly refuted this narrative during a 35-minute phone conversation on Wednesday.
No Trade Deal or Mediation: Foreign Secretary Speaks📌
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri clarified: “President Trump asked if Prime Minister Modi could make a stopover in the US on his way back from Canada. Due to prior commitments, the Prime Minister declined but both leaders agreed to meet soon.”
After visiting Canada, Modi proceeded to Croatia. The two leaders missed meeting at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis as Trump returned to Washington early.
Ceasefire Negotiated Directly Between India and Pakistan🕊️
Emphasising that the ceasefire was negotiated directly via established military channels at Pakistan’s request, Modi reiterated: “India does not and will never accept mediation.” There is “complete political consensus” in India on this, he affirmed.
Trump’s Contradictory Statement🗣️
Despite Modi’s clear statement, Trump later repeated his claim: “Well, I stopped the war…. I love Pakistan. I think Modi is a fantastic man. We are going to make a trade deal with Modi of India. But I stopped the war between Pakistan and India.”
Trump made these remarks during a White House lunch with Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir, praising Munir’s role in stopping the conflict from Pakistan’s side.
Operation Sindoor and India’s Decisive Response💥
Foreign Secretary Misri detailed that Trump initially called Modi to express condolences after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and reiterated US support for India’s counter-terrorism efforts. Modi briefed Trump on Operation Sindoor, explaining that India had clearly signalled its determination to act decisively against terrorism.
On May 6-7, India targeted terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir with precision, aiming to avoid escalation. When Pakistan threatened major retaliation on May 9, Modi warned of an even stronger response. Indeed, India’s decisive counter-attack damaged Pakistani military infrastructure and air bases, compelling Pakistan to seek a cessation of hostilities.
Broader Regional Security Talks🌍
The two leaders also discussed the Israel-Iran conflict and agreed that direct dialogue is essential for resolving the Russia-Ukraine war. They reaffirmed the Quad’s key role in ensuring Indo-Pacific security, indirectly countering China’s regional assertiveness.
Upcoming Meetings🤝
Prime Minister Modi invited Trump to visit India for the next Quad Summit. Trump accepted the invitation, expressing eagerness to visit India soon.
