Who is Monojit Mishra? Accused in Kolkata Gangrape Case📰

Overview🔎

Monojit Mishra, the main accused in the recent alleged gangrape case in Kolkata, has a history of criminal offences including harassment, assault, theft, and vandalism, according to police records.

The Incident📅

A 24-year-old law student from South Calcutta Law College filed a complaint stating that on June 25 she was beaten with a hockey stick, assaulted, filmed, and blackmailed after rejecting Mishra’s marriage proposal. The police arrested Mishra along with his two accomplices, Promit Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed.

An officer told PTI that Mishra and his associates allegedly gang-raped the student because she refused his marriage proposal. “Monojit Mishra is a history-sheeter with several cases and chargesheets against him within Kolkata Police jurisdiction,” The Telegraph quoted a senior officer as saying.

Background of Monojit Mishra👤

Monojit Mishra is a practising lawyer and was formerly a leader of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad. He studied at Alipore Law Institute four years ago and had been working there casually since last year. Following the incident, the TMC has distanced itself from him.

His father, a priest from Kalighat, expressed his anguish after learning about the allegations. He told Indian Express, “We stay in a 6 x 8 ft room. We worked hard to rise from the lower strata of society to make him a lawyer. It is tough to believe my son has done this. But if the judiciary finds him guilty after seeing all evidence, he should be given the toughest punishment. I will accept it with my head bowed.”

The Kolkata Police have formed a five-member special investigation team (SIT) headed by an assistant commissioner-rank officer to probe the alleged gangrape. “An SIT has been formed to investigate the alleged crime and will begin its work immediately,” PTI quoted an officer as saying.
