Karnataka to Safeguard Theatres Amid Thug Life Screening Row, Says Supreme Court🎬

Supreme Court Directs Karnataka to Prevent Disruption of Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life Screenings🎬

Supreme Court Steps In🧑‍⚖️

The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Karnataka government to ensure that screenings of Kamal Haasan’s film Thug Life are not obstructed in the state. According to PTI, the state government has assured the court that it will provide adequate security for theatres showing the movie.

Bench Emphasizes Artistic Freedom⚖️

A bench comprising Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan emphasized the need to avoid situations where an individual’s statements lead to public unrest, resulting in cancelled shows or restrictions on artistic performances. To prevent such disruptions, the court instructed the state government to curb any “divisive element” posing a threat to the film’s release.

PIL Closed with State Assurance✅

With the state’s assurance in place, the court closed the public interest litigation (PIL), noting that no further directions were necessary.

Background of the Petition📜

This order follows a petition filed by M Mahesh Reddy, who challenged the non-screening of Thug Life in Karnataka and sought protection for cinema halls. The court had earlier asked the state government to submit a response by June 18, stressing that threats of arson or street vigilantism cannot be tolerated.

Karnataka Government's Response🔐

In its reply, the Karnataka government confirmed that there are no official restrictions on the film’s release and pledged to provide necessary security if the producers decide to screen it in the state, as reported by ANI.

Controversial Remark Sparks Protests📣

Additionally, the state government informed the court that the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) — the apex body of the Kannada film industry — had written to Kamal Haasan requesting an apology for his controversial remark claiming that the Kannada language “originated” from Tamil. The statement sparked protests from several pro-Kannada groups.
