Imphal/New Delhi – Tensions Escalate📍
Manipur remained tense on Sunday as fresh violence broke out over the arrest of Kanan Singh, a senior member of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol. Authorities reimposed restrictions while the governor conducted an urgent security review.
Protests, Roadblocks & Arson🚫
Despite prohibitory orders, demonstrators blocked major roads using burning tyres and debris. A police post outside the SDM office in Yairipok was set ablaze, and security forces had to deploy tear gas to disperse crowds. At least 11 people were injured in the violence.
Arrest Triggered Chaos👮
The arrest of Kanan Singh, a former Manipur Police constable, by the CBI over alleged involvement in the 2023 violence has sparked public anger. Four of his associates were also detained. Singh was flown to Guwahati for police remand.
Background of the Accused🔥
Singh was reportedly dismissed from the force earlier this year for alleged smuggling of arms and looting armouries. He was also linked to the abduction of a senior police officer last year.
Internet Suspended, Curfew Reimposed📵
In efforts to curb unrest, authorities suspended mobile and broadband services in five districts, including Imphal East and West. Curfew was reimposed in Bishnupur, and movement was restricted in valley regions to prevent further escalation.
Governor Steps In🏛️
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla held meetings with security officials and political leaders. A delegation of 25 MLAs, along with Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, requested the governor’s intervention to restore peace.
Political Responses⚖️
While BJP MLA L Ibomcha acknowledged Arambai Tenggol’s support during recent flood relief, Congress MLA Okram Surjakumar stressed the need for transparency in arrests to avoid inflaming tensions.
Talks with Kuki-Zo Groups Resume🤝
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs is preparing for talks with Kuki-Zo militant groups under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement. The pact, which was in abeyance since February 2024, may be renewed following fresh discussions.
Ethnic Faultlines Run Deep⚠️
Manipur has been gripped by ethnic violence since May 2023, with nearly 250 fatalities and widespread displacement. Meitei and Kuki communities remain segregated in their respective regions, with road blockades and restricted movement continuing to impact daily life.
