Air India Stops Full-Service Flights in Manipur; Budget Carrier AI Express Remains Active✈️

Air India Ends Operations at Imphal International Airport 🛫

The Tata Group-owned full-service carrier, Air India, has officially ceased its operations at Manipur’s Imphal International Airport starting 15 June 2025, according to officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) cited by PTI on Monday, 16 June 2025.

Air India Express to Continue Services✅

Despite this move, Air India Express — the company’s low-cost subsidiary — will continue to operate flights to and from the northeastern state, ensuring passengers remain connected.

Part of a Strategic Realignment📌

“This is part of a long-standing, pre-planned strategic decision by the airline and is unrelated to any recent incident,” an airport official told PTI.

Another official explained, “The Tata Group, which owns Air India, is implementing a broader strategic realignment to revive the airline. While the full-service carrier will no longer operate at Imphal, Air India Express will continue serving passengers on these routes.”

Tragic Air India Crash Casts Shadow💔

This operational change comes shortly after a major tragedy involving Air India flight AI 171. The Ahmedabad-London flight crashed just after takeoff last week, claiming 241 lives. Only one passenger survived, and multiple people on the ground were injured when the aircraft crashed in Ahmedabad’s Meghani Nagar area on 12 June 2025 at around 1:40 p.m.

Loss of Lives: A Nation Mourns🕊️

The victims included five MBBS doctors, a postgraduate resident doctor, and the spouse of a senior medical college professor.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash, with aviation experts exploring possibilities such as engine failure or technical malfunction during takeoff.

Tata Group Chairman Speaks Out📢

In an internal letter to employees, Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran expressed profound grief: “To lose a single person we know is a tragedy, but for so many deaths to occur at once is incomprehensible. This is one of the darkest days in the Tata Group’s history.”

Not Linked to the Crash🔍

Despite the heartbreaking incident, officials have reaffirmed that Air India’s withdrawal from Imphal is part of a pre-planned strategy and is not connected to the recent accident.
