The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner registered as VT-ANB, was en route to Gatwick Airport in the UK. It departed from Ahmedabad Airport at 1:39 p.m. local time (0809 GMT) from runway 23. Air traffic control confirmed that a “Mayday” distress signal was issued just moments after takeoff, before communication with the plane was lost.

The plane crashed into a civilian residential area, including a building that housed a doctors’ hostel. “We've cleared about 70 to 80 percent of the area and are working to complete the rest,” reported a senior police officer at the scene.
