Crash Details Announced by Ministry of Civil Aviation📅
The Ministry of Civil Aviation announced on Saturday that the flight data recorder of the Air India aircraft that crashed in Ahmedabad has been recovered. Officials confirmed that the flight had climbed to an altitude of 650 feet before it began to descend.
Press Conference in Delhi🗣️
At a press conference in Delhi, Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha shared details of the tragic incident. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu was also present.
Timeline of the Incident📌
“On June 12th, at around 2 PM, we were informed that a flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick had crashed. We received the full details from Ahmedabad ATC,” Sinha said.
He added, “This was flight AIC 171 with a total of 242 people on board — 230 passengers, two pilots, and ten crew members.”
Providing a timeline, Sinha stated, “The plane took off at 1:39 PM and climbed to about 650 feet before it began to lose altitude. At the same time, the pilot declared a ‘Mayday’ — indicating a full emergency — to Ahmedabad ATC. When ATC tried to re-establish contact, there was no response. Within a minute, the aircraft crashed in Medhaninagar, approximately two kilometers from the airport.”
Previous Flight and Runway Status✅
Sinha further noted that before this accident, the aircraft had operated without incident on its previous Paris-Delhi-Ahmedabad route.
Due to the crash, the Ahmedabad runway was closed at 2:30 PM and reopened for limited operations at 5 PM after necessary procedures were completed.
Casualties and Investigation🕯️
Tragically, a total of 270 people lost their lives in the crash. Multiple agencies are currently investigating the incident to determine the cause and prevent such tragedies in the future.
