Background: Hostilities in Iran⚔️

Amid escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel, the Indian government evacuated 110 students from Urmia University in Iran. They were moved first to Yerevan, Armenia, on Tuesday and then flown back to India. Of the evacuees, 94 were from Jammu and Kashmir, while others hailed from Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and more.

Families Reunited at the Airport👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

At Indira Gandhi International Airport, families waited eagerly to embrace their children. State government officials from Jammu & Kashmir and southern states facilitated the safe return.

Naseeb Ahmed, father of a second-year MBBS student, shared, “Until I hug my son, my heart won’t rest. Living with the fear of my child stuck in a war zone has been terrifying.”

Students Share Their Ordeal💬

Nargis, a medical student from Mumbai, said, “Although my area hadn’t witnessed airstrikes, living under constant threat was mentally draining. We’re deeply grateful to the government for getting us out safely.”

Varta, a student from Kashmir, described the critical situation: “We were terrified. But when the Indian government team came to our doorstep, it felt like home. The Armenian authorities were also very supportive.”

Mir Khalif recounted witnessing missile strikes near his neighborhood: “It was tense and frightening. I hope we never see those days again.”

Ali Akbar, from Delhi, described seeing a missile and drone fall while traveling by bus: “What you see in the news is true—Tehran has been devastated.”

Government Response and Ongoing Evacuations✈️

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh confirmed that evacuation efforts are ongoing: “We have more flights ready. Another plane will leave today. We are also evacuating more people from Turkmenistan. Our missions have 24-hour helplines open for any evacuation requests.”

Parents Express Gratitude, Urge Continued Efforts🙏

Outside the airport, parents waited anxiously. Haider Ali, father of 21-year-old Maaz Haider, urged authorities to evacuate students still trapped in Tehran.

Parvez Alam, father of Sameer Alam, said, “Everything was fine until the situation worsened. We are thankful the students were evacuated to Armenia and kept safely in hotels until they could fly home.”

Minor Tensions Over Travel Arrangements🚌

Some tensions arose when students from Jammu and Kashmir refused to board buses to Srinagar. One student said anonymously, “We have been travelling for four days already. Now they want us to take buses for yet another exhausting journey. This is unacceptable.”

A Safe Return Amid Conflict✅

Despite such concerns, the overwhelming sentiment among students and families was one of relief and gratitude as they finally returned home from a region gripped by conflict.
