Relations between India and the United States have entered a turbulent phase after US President Donald Trump admitted that his administration’s decision to impose tariffs of up to 50 percent on Indian exports was directly linked to New Delhi’s growing purchases of oil from Russia, a country under Western sanctions for its invasion of Ukraine.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump acknowledged that the tariffs had created a rift between the two strategic partners. “Look, India was their [Russia’s] biggest customer. I put a 50% tariff on India because they’re buying oil from Russia. That’s not an easy thing to do,” Trump said on the Fox & Friends program. He conceded that the move was a “big deal” and had significantly strained US–India relations.
