Cloudbursts and Flash Floods Ravage Northern States🌧️
Jammu and Kashmir🏔️
In Ramban district, three people lost their lives and two went missing after a cloudburst struck a remote village on August 30. Officials confirmed that the victims included two women who were washed away by the floods.
The region has been reeling from record rainfall, which has already left more than 110 people dead and 32 missing. Flash floods in Rajgarh, a cloudburst in Chisoti, and landslides in Reasi district near the Vaishno Devi route have further compounded the crisis. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has remained closed for the fourth straight day due to landslides.
Uttarakhand🌪️
Heavy rains and a series of cloudbursts in Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri, and Bageshwar districts have left six people dead and 11 missing. The extreme weather triggered landslides, damaging homes and burying several residents under debris.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami instructed disaster management officials and district magistrates to carry out rescue operations on a war footing. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring citizen safety. In Chamoli’s Nanda Nagar area, nearly 20 families were relocated in time, preventing further casualties.
Meanwhile, the swollen Mandakini River has overflowed, endangering those in Kedarnath and the Mandakini valley. Adding to the crisis, a fresh cloudburst in Vasu Kedar worsened the already grim situation.
Himachal Pradesh⛰️
Chamba district has been among the hardest hit, where flash floods and landslides since August 24 have claimed around ten lives. Victims include trekkers and locals who were either buried under debris, drowned, or struck by falling rocks.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu reviewed the disaster situation in five districts—Chamba, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Kangra, and Mandi—through a video conference on Friday.
IMD Warning⚠️
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy rains, warning of moderate to high flash flood risks in several districts of Himachal Pradesh, including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Solan, Shimla, and Sirmour.
In Uttarakhand, districts such as Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Dehradun, Pauri Garhwal, Nainital, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, and Pithoragarh also face similar risks. Satellite imagery from INSAT-3DR indicates intense to very intense convection over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid risky areas, and follow official advisories closely. 🙏
