2006 Mumbai Train Blasts: Bombay High Court Acquits All 12 Convicted🚨
On July 11, 2006, a series of seven bomb blasts ripped through Mumbai local trains within just 11 minutes, killing 189 people and injuring over 800 others. 🕯️
High Court Verdict⚖️
Nineteen years later, the Bombay High Court has acquitted all 12 people who were convicted by a trial court in the serial blasts case.
Background of the Case📅
In 2015, a special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court had found these 12 accused guilty. Five were sentenced to death and the remaining seven to life imprisonment.
High Court Observations📝
The High Court bench of Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Shyam Chandak set aside the trial court's verdict, stating that the prosecution had "utterly failed" to prove the charges.
"The prosecution has utterly failed to prove the case against the accused. It is hard to believe that the accused committed the crime. Hence, their conviction is quashed and set aside," the bench observed.
Reasons for Acquittal🔍
- Benefit of doubt was granted due to lack of evidence.
- Witness statements were questioned as it was implausible to recall a suspect’s identity after 100 days.
- Inconsistencies were noted in the investigation.
- Explosives, arms, and maps recovered were not proven to be connected to the blasts.
- The prosecution could not conclusively prove the type of bombs used in the attacks.
About the 2006 Bombings💥
The coordinated bombings targeted first-class compartments during evening rush hour. Rigged pressure cookers were used to amplify the impact. 🕰️
The blasts occurred between 6:24 pm and 6:35 pm, affecting trains near:
- Matunga Road

- Bandra
- Khar Road
- Jogeshwari
- Bhayandar
- Borivali
