CBI Arrests Senior NEHU Professor on ₹3.43 Lakh Bribery Charges🚨

Who Was Arrested?🔍

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Dr. Nirmalendu Saha, a senior professor in the Department of Zoology and Dean of the School of Life Sciences at the crisis-hit North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). Also arrested was Pranjal Sharma, a Guwahati-based proprietor of a supply firm.

How Did It Happen?📅

According to an official statement by the CBI, a case was registered on June 11 after credible information indicated that Sharma was involved in corrupt practices in collusion with Dr. Saha and others. The professor allegedly accepted bribes in exchange for awarding supply contracts for scientific equipment and laboratory materials, and for facilitating the clearance of related bills.

Caught Red-Handed🚨

Both individuals were caught during a CBI trap operation at the Gauhati University guest house on June 10. They were apprehended red-handed during the exchange of the bribe and produced before a court in Guwahati on Thursday.

Evidence Seized📂

The agency recovered incriminating documents during searches at two premises and continued searches at a third location within the NEHU campus.

Turmoil at NEHU🏫

Dr. Saha had been serving as the acting Vice-Chancellor since November 2024 after the previous Vice-Chancellor, Prabha Shankar Shukla, went on leave amid widespread campus protests against his alleged mismanagement and authoritarian leadership.

Prof. Shukla Declared Persona Non Grata🚫

Prof. Shukla remains away from the university and has been declared persona non grata by the local community surrounding NEHU.
